Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was a Maratha warrior king and the founder of the Maratha Empire in western India in the 17th century. Chatrapati Shivaji carved out an enclave from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire.
